    The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private Charles Stacey, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 2 July 1863, while serving with Company D, 55th Ohio Infantry, in action at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Private Stacey voluntarily took an advanced position on the skirmish line for the purpose of ascertaining the location of Confederate sharpshooters, and under heavy fire held the position thus taken until the company of which he was a member went back to the main line.
