The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Charley Dunbeck, Captain, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 43d Company, 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action near St. Etienne, France, October 4, 1918. Although wounded in the head and in a position exposed to intense machine-gun and artillery fire, Captain Dunbeck refused to be evacuated until he had personally given instructions to the second-in-command for carrying on the advance.
