The Navy Cross is awarded to Chief Water Tender Charlie S. Bostwick, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism on the occasion of the collision of the U.S.S. Shaw with the H.M.S. Aquitania when the Shaw was cut in two and set on fire. Chief Water Tender Bostwick, with others set a splendid example of efficiency, coolness, and indifference to danger, remaining at his post in the engine room, although water was knee deep and he had every reason to believe the ship was sinking.
