By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Clay Eversole (ASN: 1543587), United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Private Eversole distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Division, A.E.F., in action near Heurne, Belgium, 2 – 4 November 1918. He further distinguished himself while crossing the Scheldt River during enemy bombardment in order to give first aid to the wounded.

During the advance of Company K, 148th Infantry, Private Eversole frequently exposed himself to great danger by carrying a number of wounded men through heavy machine-gun fire from an open field to a place of safety.
