The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Cornelius J. Mahoney, Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Kadish, Russia, October 16, 1918. After two unsuccessful attempts by patrols to locate the right flank of the enemy, Sergeant Mahoney went out alone behind the enemy lines at great personal risk and selected an excellent position from which to deliver a flank attack. The attack delivered by 60 men from the position selected was highly successful.
