The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Cornelius J. O’Brien, Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Ville-Savoye, France, August 11, 1918. While engaged on the construction of a bridge over the Valle River, Sergeant OBrien voluntarily left shelter during intense fire and carried one of his wounded officers through a heavy machine-gun and artillery barrage to a dressing station.
