Curtis R. Kimes
Silver Star
Vietnam War
U.S. Army
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Curtis R. Kimes, Specialist E4, United States Army, Company E, 52nd Infantry for gallantry in action engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Kimes distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action during the period 8 May 1968 through 9 May 1968, while serving as a team member of a reconnaissance patrol during a combat mission in the Republic of Vietnam. When his unit made contact with a large enemy force, one man was immediately wounded. Specialist Kimes and a comrade dragged the man to a rescue area, but the helicopter was unable to land when enemy fire was directed at it. As enemy fire wounded other members of the unit, Specialist Kimes gave them first aid and then helped them evade the enemy until a recue aircraft was able to evacuate them. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
