Daniel J. Longworth

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Daniel J. Longworth, Specialist Four, United States Army. For gallantry in action, Specialist Four Longworth distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 30 August 1967, while serving as a radio-telephone operator with Company C, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 8th Cavalry during a search and destroy mission near Bong Son, Republic of Vietnam. When his platoon discovered a cave complex, Specialist Longworth threw a riot gas grenade into the opening of the cave to drive out any occupants. After one enemy soldier emerged from the cave and threw a grenade, wounding himself and one of Specialist Longworth’s comrades, Specialist Longworth volunteered to investigate the tunnel for other enemy soldiers. Disregarding his own safety, he engaged and forced several other enemy soldiers to surrender. His quick action of placing effective rapid fire on the enemy soldiers, contributed greatly to the successful completion of his unit’s mission. Specialist Longworth’s gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
