The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Daniel J. O’Keefe, Corporal, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Epinonville, France, September 27, 1918. When half of his platoon were on a hillside under heavy machine-gun and snipers’ fire, Corporal OKeefe effectively covered the withdrawal of his detachment with his automatic rifle.
