The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to David V. Binkley, Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action at Hill No 212, near Sergy, northwest of Chateau-Thierry, France, July 28, 1918. Private Binkley sought and obtained permission to go out in front of our lines and recover his corporal, who was lying severely wounded in the open. He crossed an open area that was swept for more than 50 yards by enemy machine guns, reached the corporal, and carried him safely back into our lines. Later he was wounded, but refused to go to the aid station until his company had won its objective.
