The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Dean F. Smiley, Private, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 75th Company, 6th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action near St. Etienne, France, October 9, 1918. Private Smiley rushed a hostile machine-gun nest single-handed, killing three of the crew and capturing the remainder. While taking his prisoners to the rear, this gallant soldier was killed by enemy artillery fire.
