    Vietnam War

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Donald Carpenter (US54666436), Sergeant, U.S. Army, for gallantry in action. Sergeant Carpenter distinguished himself by heroic actions on 6 March 1969, while serving as a squad leader with Company C, 2d Battalion, 22d Infantry in the Republic of Vietnam. While on a combat operation, Company C came into contact with a large enemy force. During the initial contact, Company C sustained several casualties due to the intense hostile fire. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Carpenter exposed himself to the intense hostile fire as he moved through the bullet swept area and evacuated a wounded comrade to safety. As his squad moved forward, they came under intense fire from well concealed enemy positions. Fully exposed to the enemy fire, Sergeant Carpenter moved through a hail of fire and destroyed the emplacements. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and defeat of the enemy force. Sergeant Carpenter’s personal bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
By direction of the President under the Provisions of the Act of Congress, approved 9 July 1918, AR 672-5-1, and USARV Reg. 672-1.
