    U.S. Army

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 9 July 1918 (amended by act of 25 July 1963), has awarded the Silver Star to Specialist Donald W. Simpson, Company A, 2D Battalion, 5th Cavalry, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Simpson was serving as the radio/telephone operator for a forward reconnaissance team, which came under intense automatic weapons fire. Specialist Simpson established radio communication with the Company Commander to request support from helicopter gunships and artillery. Despite continued intense enemy fire, and at great risk to himself, Specialist Simpson maneuvered to a position allowing him a better view of the enemy. Specialist Simpson established direct contact with the Air Force pilot on station, directing an air strike on the enemy. His courageous actions and exemplary professionalism contributed to the successful outcome of the engagement and directly led to the saving of his fellow Soldiers lives. Specialist Simpsons unquestionable valor while engaged in a military operation involving conflict with an insurgent force is in keeping with the finest tradition of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 1st Cavalry Division, and the United States Army.
