The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Douglas Orndorf (20365289), Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 6 June 1944, at Normandy, France. When Sergeant Orndorff landed with his platoon on the coast of France, he found that the heavy enemy rifle, machine gun and artillery fire had pinned down two battalions. He rallied his platoon to attack and, despite the intense enemy fire, fearlessly led them forward in an assault on the enemy positions. This action so inspired the other troops that they joined in the assault and helped carry the positions. The courage, initiative and determined leadership displayed by Sergeant Orndorff exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 29th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
