The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Earl E. S-39 during the course of three aggressive and successful war patrols in enemy-held waters. Performing his duties as Chief of the Boat in an outstanding manner, Nave, by his competent leadership and thorough knowledge of his ship, rendered invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in sinking an armed enemy auxiliary vessel in Philippine waters and a large Japanese naval tanker in the Java Sea.
