The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Major Edmund Rice, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 3 July 1863, while serving with 19th Massachusetts Infantry, in action at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Major Rice exhibited conspicuous bravery on the third day of the battle on the countercharge against Pickett’s division where he fell severely wounded within the enemy’s lines.
