The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Edward A. Burton, First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Cierges, France, August 1, 1918. Lieutenant Burton was mortally wounded while carrying a wounded man from a position exposed to artillery and machine-gun fire, but, regardless of his own suffering, he persisted in his task until he had placed the wounded man in a place of safety. Lieutenant Burton died while being evacuated.
