    World War II

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Edward D. Harris, First Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, in action against enemy forces on 13 February 1943, at Kasserine Pass in Tunisia. First Sergeant Harris’ company was pinned down by two German machine gun emplacements. Sergeant Harris and Sergeant Dolan took a grenade launcher and a sack of grenades and worked their way behind the emplacements and knocked them out. Sergeant Harris then directed artillery fire for three hours, stopping the German tanks and infantry. First Sergeant Harris’ intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
