    U.S. Army

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Elbert E. Dickey, Sergeant, United States Army, for gallantry in action. Sergeant Dickey distinguished himself by heroic actions on 18 September 1968, while serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry, 11th Infantry Brigade (Light), in the Republic of Vietnam. While under intense enemy fire, Sergeant Dickey singlehandedly eliminated an enemy automatic weapons position and directed repelling machine gun fire at concealed and dug in enemy. Seeing a comrade wounded and fearful that he might suffer greater harm, Sergeant Dickey, heedless of the danger around him, moved into an exposed position and recovered his wounded comrade to safety. Sergeant Dickey’s heroic actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect distinct credit upon himself, the Americal Division, and the United States Army.
