    The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Second Lieutenant Edward John McClernand, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 30 September 1877, while serving with 2d U.S. Cavalry, in action at Bear Paw Mountain, Montana. Second Lieutenant McClernand gallantly attacked a band of hostiles and conducted the combat with excellent skill and boldness.
