    The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant Edwin Leonard, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 18 June 1864, while serving with Company I, 37th Massachusetts Infantry, in action at Petersburg, Virginia. Sergeant Leonard voluntarily exposed himself to the fire of a Union brigade to stop their firing on the Union skirmish line.
