Elbert E. Brooks

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Elbert E. Brooks, Private, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 79th Company, 6th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action at Bouresches, France, June 6, 1918. Private Brooks was conspicuous for heroic action in placing his body in front of his platoon leader while under heavy machine-gun fire, in order that he might dress the officer’s wounds. He was shot twice in the hip while shielding the body of his leader.
