Elmer D. Arnold

The Navy Cross is awarded to Chief Boatswain’s Mate Elmer D. Arnold, U.S. Navy, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in command of the Armed Guard on board the American S.S. Chincha during a gunfight with a German submarine March 21, 1918. The ship was saved as a result of the combined efforts of the commanding officer of the ship and the commanding officer of the Armed Guard.
