Silver Star
U.S. Army
World War II
For gallantry in action in the vicinity of Montebourg, France, 10 June 1944. When his company was immobilized by heavy machine gun fire from well dug-in enemy emplacements, Sergeant Van Duyse volunteered to accompany an officer in a two-man attack. They moved forward aggressively and destroyed two hostile machine gun positions. Advancing to the top of the hill where the enemy was located, they charged through a hail of fire and captured another machine gun and eighteen German soldiers. This daring action enabled the company to overrun the enemy positions. Sergeant Van Duyses gallant courage and unflinching devotion to duty are in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service.
