  • General Orders 81, W.D., 1919

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Emory L. Butler, Corporal, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Bellicourt, France, September 29, 1918. Becoming separated from his platoon during the advance, Corporal Butler continued 500 yards beyond the objective, and, although there were several enemy machine-guns near him, he went to a dugout and forced the 35 occupants to come out and surrender. He was soon joined by other members of his platoon and aided in cleaning out other nearby dug-outs, displaying absolute disregard of danger.
