Florence Crowley

  • The Navy Cross is awarded to Chief Boatswain’s Mate Florence Crowley, U.S. Navy, for distinguished service in the line of his profession as commander of the Armed Guard of the S.S. Goldshell, and in an engagement with an enemy submarine. On July 10, 1917, the submarine was sighted awash, and the ship opened fire. The submarine fired two shots, dropped astern and disappeared.
