General Orders No. 72, W.D., 1920
The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Forrest Burns, First Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Soissons, France, July 18 – 19, 1918. When the advance of his platoon had been halted by heavy machine-gun fire from the front, Sergeant Burns, with three others, advanced through heavy machine-gun fire and attacked the enemy position. His group succeeded in capturing two enemy machine guns, thereby enabling his organization to advance with slight loss. After the platoon commander had been killed, he directed the advance of his platoon until severely wounded.
