The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Francis M. Bird, Pharmacist’s Mate, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism in action near Suippes, France, October 3 – 7, 1918. Pharmacists Mate Bird showed great courage in caring for and evacuating the wounded under heavy shell fire, and at one time he alone brought a wounded man from the field after two litter bearers had been killed.
