Francis M. Smith

The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to First Lieutenant & Adjutant Francis M. Smith, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 6 February 1865, while serving with 1st Maryland Infantry, in action at Dabney’s Mills, Virginia. First Lieutenant Smith voluntarily remained with the body of his regimental commander under a heavy fire after the brigade had retired and brought the body off the field.
