The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to First Sergeant Francis Marion Cunningham, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 6 April 1865, while serving with Company H, 1st West Virginia Cavalry, in action at Deatonsville (Sailor’s Creek), Virginia, for capture of battle flag of 12th Virginia Infantry (Confederate States of America) in hand-to-hand battle while wounded.
