    The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Fred Joseph Zinner, Second Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 17th Company, 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action near St. Etienne, France, October 4. 1918. While attacking a strongly held enemy position, under heavy machine-gun and artillery fire, Second Lieutenant Zinner rallied men of another company, who had become separated from their organization, to his support. With these reinforcements, his platoon was able to relieve a very critical situation.
