The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Frederick H. Brown, Jr., Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Ronssoy, France, September 29, 1918. On two occasions Sergeant Brown averted heavy casualties in his platoon by going forward and, single handed, destroying machine-gun nests with hand grenades. At the time of his death, Sergeant Brown had brought his platoon to the farthest point of advance.
