The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant Frederick W. Fuger, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 3 July 1863, while serving with Battery A, 4th U.S. Artillery, in action at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. All the officers of his battery having been killed or wounded and five of its guns disabled in Pickett’s assault, Sergeant Fuger succeeded to the command and fought the remaining gun with most distinguished gallantry until the battery was ordered withdrawn.
