Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 370 (October 4, 1945)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Private Garner W. Mathis, 38 223 187, Infantry, Company “C”, 15th Infantry Regiment. At 1400 hours, on 16 March 1945, near Ormersviller, France, when three enemy soldiers attempted to infiltrate his company’s left flank, Private Mathis engaged the Germans in a firefight. Although hostile rifle fire from a range of fifty yards scarcely missed him, Private Mathis leaped from his fighting hole and charged the advancing enemy. His accurate rifle fire killed one German, and forced two to surrender.
