Brautigam, Private, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 49th Company, 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action in the Bois-de-Belleau, France, June 23, 1918. After carrying messages all night under intense artillery fire, Private Brautigam volunteered, with another soldier, and carried a wounded officer through the shell fire to a dressing station one kilometer away.
