The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to George I. Peterson, Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism in action near St. Etienne, France, October 3 – 7, 1918. Pharmacist’s Mate Peterson was directly responsible for the saving of several lives while obliged to care for the company’s wounded alone. On succeeding days he traveled from one side of the company sector to the other, through artillery and machine-gun barrage, hunting and caring for the wounded.
