The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Gordon Johnston, United States Army, for most distinguished gallantry on 7 March 1906, while serving with U.S. Signal Corps, in action at Mount Bud Dajo, Jolo, Philippine Islands. First Lieutenant Johnston voluntarily took part in and was dangerously wounded during an assault on the enemy’s works.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Gordon Johnston, Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action at Palo, Leyte, Philippine Islands, February 1, 1900. While in command of a small detachment of scouts Lieutenant Johnston displayed remarkable gallantry and leadership in charging a greatly superior force of entrenched insurgents in the face of cannon and rifle fire, driving the enemy from their position and capturing the town of Palo.
