The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Harold B. Selleck (0-1389419), Second Lieutenant (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 1 August 1944, in France. While reconnoitering a route of approach for his battalion, Second Lieutenant Selleck encountered a German infantry-tank force which immediately subjected him to machine gun and direct tank fire. From an exposed position along a road, he effectively deployed his troops and personally engaged the enemy at close range with his rifle. In the ensuing fire-fight, Second Lieutenant Selleck, disregarding the intense machine gun and small arms fire placed upon him, led his men in the capture of 107 Germans, a Mark IV tank, and considerable stores of equipment and supplies. Second Lieutenant Selleck’s intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
