The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Corporal Harris Smith Hawthorne, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 6 April 1865, while serving with Company F, 121st New York Infantry, in action at Deatonsville (Sailor’s Creek), Virginia. Corporal Hawthorne captured the Confederate General G. W. Custis Lee.
