    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Harry Lewis Smith, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 13th Machine-Gun Battalion, 5th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cunel, France, 14 October 1918. Leaving his shelter in a shallow machine-gun emplacement, and accompanied by one soldier Lieutenant Smith ventured forth through a most intense fire to the aid of a wounded officer and assisted in carrying him a distance of 170 yards to safety.
