The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Blacksmith Henry W. B. Mechlin, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 25 June 1876, while serving with Company H, 7th U.S. Cavalry, in action at Little Big Horn, Montana. With three comrades during the entire engagement, Blacksmith Mechlin courageously held a position that secured water for the command.
