The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Henry West, Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 47th Company, 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action near Chateau-Thierry, France, June 25, 1918. Sergeant West unselfishly exposed himself in an effort to bring down an enemy sniper who had wounded several members of his group, and was himself killed while in the performance of this self-sacrificing act.
