The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Herman J. Bergasse, First Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Binarville, France, September 28, 1918. Assuming command of the company after his commanding officer had become a casualty, Sergeant Bergasse led a formidable attack on an enemy machine-gun emplacement, silencing two guns in the nest, and permitting the further advance of his battalion.
