The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Second Lieutenant Hillary Beyer, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 17 September 1862, while serving with Company H, 90th Pennsylvania Infantry, in action at Antietam, Maryland. After his command had been forced to fall back, Second Lieutenant Beyer remained alone on the line of battle, caring for his wounded comrades and carrying one of them to a place of safety.
