The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Captain (Infantry) Horace Porter, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 20 September 1863, while serving with Ordinance Department, in action at Chickamauga, Georgia. While acting as a volunteer aide, at a critical moment when the lines were broken, Captain Porter rallied enough fugitives to hold the ground under heavy fire long enough to effect the escape of wagon trains and batteries.
