    The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Howard V. Brunner, Private First Class, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Sergy, France, July 29 – 30, 1918. As platoon runner, Private First Class Brunner showed marked heroism in volunteering for dangerous missions, repeatedly carrying important messages through zones swept by intense artillery and machine-gun fire. He remained on duty after being wounded, and until his command was relieved.
