The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to James Courtney, Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 43d Company, 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action near Blanc Mont, France, October 5, 1918. Upon learning that a number of soldiers were lying wounded in “No Man’s Land,” Sergeant Courtney immediately volunteered and made trips over an area swept by machine-gun and rifle fire until all the wounded had been carried to shelter.
