U.S. Army
World War II
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Private James H. Gillis, 33679859, United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy in Germany, 23 November 1944. When heavy fire from five German pillboxes had halted the advance of his company, Private Gillis, together with another soldier, voluntarily led a platoon in an attack on the fortifications which resulted in the capture of the positions and 56 prisoners. In the accomplishment of this gallant act, Private Gillis lost his life. The cool courage, aggressive action and loyalty displayed by Private Gillis present an excellent example of those soldierly qualities which are in accordance with the highest traditions of the military service.
