The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Surgeon James Harry Thompson, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 14 March 1862, while serving with U.S. Volunteers, in action at New Bern, North Carolina. Surgeon Thompson voluntarily reconnoitered the enemy’s position and carried orders under the hottest fire.
