    The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Captain (Cavalry) James Jackson, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 20 August 1877, while serving with 1st U.S. Cavalry, in action at Camas Meadows, Idaho. Captain Jackson dismounted from his horse in the face of a heavy fire from pursuing Indians, and with the assistance of one or two of the men of his command secured to a place of safety the body of his trumpeter, who had been shot and killed.
